From nickel to Niagara
The sleeping giant that is Sudbury’s nickel industry, much of which has been dormant for the summer, could show new signs of life as the average July price for the metal looks to be above US$7/lb, well over previous analyst estimates. While still far below the 2007 highs of US$25/lb, the situation is still a marked improvement on the price levels of US$4.40/lb earlier this year. Should the slow price recovery continue, the situation will start to look more positive for many of the nickel-mining groups.

Glimmer of hope
Amid ongoing dire economic results, safe haven purchasing has kept gold at a relatively high price of late, hovering above US$960/oz in late February. For pureplay gold miners or gold-focused players with established portfolios of working mines, this is welcome news and for Barrick, Newmont, IAMGOLD, Polyus, AngloGold Ashanti and others things do not seem quite so bad.

A rapid rethink
IN LAST month's issue, the question as good as it gets?
formed the basis for a comment that highlighted the
record visitor attendance and exhibitor presence at the
MINExpo show in Las Vegas. At the time, OEM suppliers,
EPCM contractors and others were fairly sure that, as far
as mining was concerned, the economic downturn was not a
particular worry due to the number of large-scale projects in the
pipeline for the next two to three years.
