Power and automation-technology group ABB has installed and commissioned the first gearless mill drive for Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco) at the company’s Andina copper mine in Chile. Bechtel was the EPCM contractor and Metso the mill supplier.

ABB’s supply consisted of a 13,050kW gearless drive motor, including auxiliary equipment to operate it and a pre-assembled containerised electrical house, plus the mill auxiliary equipment. Andina, 80km northeast of Santiago, outputs over 248,000t/y of copper concentrate. The crush, grind and float line is located in the underground concentrator. ABB said its main challenge was size limitations.

The 7.62m x 11.23m stator had to be delivered through a tunnel of 6m x 6m, and the bridge crane capacity was only 60t. The design typically consists of four parts, but the demands of this project challenged ABB to divide it into five. The gearless mill drive provides maximum control over grinding. By acting as a variable-speed drive, the unit helps mills to start smoothly without any mechanical stress.
