ABB has won a second order from Newmont Mining to deliver three gearless mill drive (GMD) systems for installation at Yanacocha’s Conga copper/gold project in Peru. The first contract was announced in August 2010.
The Conga project has recently received full funding approval by the board of directors of Newmont and Buenaventura, the two main Yanacocha shareholders with 51% and 43% respectively. The project is located 900km north of Lima, at an altitude of 4,100m above sea level. Fluor Corp is acting as the EPCM contractor for the project.
The contract includes the complete engineering and delivery of a 28MW GMD system for a 12.8m diameter semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding mill, and for 15.6MW, foot-mounted GMD systems for two 7.9m diameter ball mills.
The former will be manufactured at ABB’s factory in Bilbao, Spain, and the latter units at ABB’s GMD assembly factory in Basel, Switzerland.
ABB will also provide spare parts, maintenance and support systems for the machines.
