ABC Online has announced that BHP Billiton's Cannington mine in North West Queensland has become the first in the world to introduce remote blasting. The new technology developed by Orica Mining Services utilises radio communication channels to fire explosives.
Stuart Miller from Orica commented: "This technology basically removes the hardwire, and you communicate wirelessly, like you would with a wireless broadband in your home, down an antenna to the blasting location.”
Orica believes that the technology will set new standards in safety and lead the way for other mines across the world.
