Crushing & Conveying

Gecko Mineral Processing recently purchased a Terex Finlay J-1480 jaw crusher to increase its coal crushing capacity at its operations in South Africa.

The Terex Finlay J-1480 jaw crusher is currently being used in a primary crushing application, reducing run of mine coal from 600mm to 200mm before passing through a secondary process and shipment to Eskom, South Africa’s national power utility. According to Rasheel Sukdhoe, regional sales manager for the equipment supplier Pilot Crushtec, the jaw crusher is delivering 600t/h and could increase output to 700t/h if necessary.

Willem Botha, acting CEO of Gecko Mineral Processing, said that the performance-enhancing pre-screen built into the crusher’s vibrating feeder was particularly impressive. He said: “The pre-screen takes out the <50mm fines before they enter the jaw chamber. We don’t want to crush these as it reduces output and what we are concerned with is run of mine coal.”

In this type of application, the pre-screen separates <50mm material at a rate in excess of 100t/h, and it is also a saleable product. In additional, the use of a pre-screen represents a long term cost saving as eliminating the fines reduces wear on the crusher linings. The operators have the option of discharging the fines via the Terex Finlay J-1480’s jaw crusher bypass conveyor or returning the fines to the crushed product stockpile conveyor.

The Terex Finlay J-1480 is the largest jaw crusher in the Terex Finlay range and the unit operated by Gecko Mineral Processing is the first of its type to come into use in South Africa.
