Gold Fields has placed a new order with Sandvik Mining for five LH514 14t load haul dumpers (LHDs) that will go into commission at its South Deep gold mine, approximately 45km southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The first of the five new units will be delivered in March 2012, followed by a staggered delivery of the remaining LHDs over the course of the year.
The order follows the successful deployment of three such units at South Deep, along with the recent underground commissioning of a Sandvik DS210L-M underground bolting rig — the only fully mechanised rock bolter available in the South African mining industry.
Sam Kader of Sandvik commented: “The order for the five LHDs is very significant to us and effectively forges our longstanding relationship with Gold Fields into a partnership which upholds this valued customer’s commitment to safety and productivity. This relationship has also been ratified by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding relating to service delivery in 2011.”
