Crushing & Conveying

Joy Mining has reported the successful installation of a longwall system at the FMC Westvaco soda ash mine in Wyoming, US. The mine produces 4.6Mt/y of trona which is converted to soda ash. More than 90% of the soda ash used in the US comes from Wyoming trona mines, along with more than 30% of the world’s supply.

In January 2009, the mine took delivery of a Joy 7LS5 shearer, 131 Joy shields, each 2m wide and capable of supporting 960t of rock, two Joy armored face conveyors and 42mm flat link chains, and a 450hp stageloader with a 42mm Joy Broadband low-profile chain.

As a result, the current longwall is now recovering 50% more of the in-seam trona than with its previous longwall system.

In addition to the longwall system, Westvaco also ordered a Joy Faceboss control platform for the shearer which provides operators with automated cut sequence settings, advanced diagnostics with on-board graphic displays, and machine performance monitoring and analysis.
