Sandvik Mining and Construction has announced plans to close its manufacturing plant in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The decision follows a thorough assessment of the operation’s future financial robustness, an alignment of the global manufacturing capacity and addressing of a number of projects critical to its long-run profitability.
The factory’s decommissioning is scheduled for the end of 2010 and affects all 114 Sandvik’s Underground Mining employees on site.
The plant, which opened in 1981, currently manufactures underground hard rock mining equipment including; low profile loaders and light dump trucks, and also makes underground soft rock rubber-tyred vehicles. R&D and engineering of these products will continue at Sandvik’s three Mining and Construction factories in China, Australia and Finland.
