Sandvik Mining and Construction has successfully completed the assembly of a compact bucket wheel excavator and beltwagon, for Mátra Kraftwerk AG in Hungary.

Sandvik was awarded the contract in July 2007, and after completing the detailed design and fabrication of the main components, assembly of the entire unit began at the beginning of November 2008. The project was executed in eight months, according to schedule.

The first extraction level of the Bükkábrány open cast lignite mine began production in June 2009. The new bucket wheel excavator will increase production capacity and also raise productivity at the mine, where it is due to commence service in September this year.

The new unit with a total weight of around 1,650t has a 28m boom on which the 12m diameter bucket wheel is located. The power output of the bucket wheel fitted with 16 buckets, is around 1,100 kW. The total output of the machine amounts to 3,200kW. The excavator and beltwagon are designed to generate a combined conveying output of around 6,700lcm/h, and an annual capacity of 12 million bank cubic meters.
