Sandvik has announced that it has been selected to supply a range of mining equipment to Northern Iron Ltd’s Sydvaranger Gruve open-pit iron mine which is due to reopen soon. The mine which is located 8km south of Kirkenes in northern Norway has been closed since 1997. It has now been refurbished and concentrate production is due to commence in late October 2009, with the first export shipment scheduled for four to five weeks later.

Sandvik has delivered three crushers, seven feeders and a new set of conveyor components to refurbish the mine’s old conveyor system. Three Sandvik CH870 cone crushers (one secondary and two tertiary), have been installed where the former Symons 7’ crushers used to operate prior to the closure of the mine and have a capacity of 1,325t/h. Four SP1423 and three SP1323H pan feeders have also been chosen for the plant.

“It is incredibly stimulating to be involved in the reopening of this Norwegian industrial giant. Sydvaranger mine will be the flagship it once was in Norwegian mining, and Sandvik is proud to be part of its future success. This partnership not only encompasses the supply of high-quality products, but also what Sandvik represents in terms of collaboration and service,” says Tollef Eliassen, customer segment manager for Sandvik Mining and Construction, Surface Mining, in Norway.
