A research team from Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology is trialling an extraction process that recovers zinc from the fly ash produced as waste by trash incinerators and power plants.

The Chalmers extraction process starts by treating the fly ash, which has historically been classified as hazardous waste and landfilled, with an acid wash that releases zinc and other metal
