Metso Outotec chosen for Karara tailings plant expansion

Finnish mining equipment maker Metso Outotec has secured a contract worth up to €20 million (US$23.7 million) to supply key filtration and material handling equipment for Karara Mining’s iron ore project in Western Australia.

The expansion will include the Larox FFP3512

Metso Outotec said the implementation of its technology at the operation will increase the current tailings filtration capacity from 30 kt/d to over 45 kt/d, noting that the facility was already one of the largest filtered tailings facilities in the world.

Delivery will take place during 2022 with the expanded facility to start operations in Q4 the same year.

The expansion will include the Larox FFP3512 primary filtration equipment, material handling conveyor systems and peripheral items. Additionally, spare parts and supervisory services will be supplied to support commissioning and plant ramp up.

"We are very proud that Karara Mining Limited has chosen Metso Outotec to deliver the plant design and key equipment in this expansion project. This is a continuation of earlier delivered proprietary key process equipment and long-term onsite maintenance service agreements," said Kai Rönnberg, vice president, Minerals Sales - Asia Pacific.

The company did not specify the exact financial details of the deal, but said the typical value for an order like this is in the range of €15-20 million depending on the scope of delivery.
