The new line is available frame sized IEC 1355 to IEC 1000 (International Electrotechnical Commission) and in the power range of 250 kilowatts to 10 megawatts at a line frequency of 50 or 60 hertz.
"These three-phase induction motors between 4 and 14 poles are designed for voltages up to 13.8kV," the company said, adding that they are ideal for mills, crushers, blowers, exhaust fans, conveyors, centrifuges and other applications.
WEG Germany director of European high-voltage solutions Andreas Schulte Mesum noted that the design, which also includes steel casing and two different brush systems, has been based on specific electromechanical properties that offer long life and high stability.
In addition, the wound rotors of slip-ring motors allow them to achieve high starting torques along with low start-up current as, in contrast to the design of a squirrel-cage motor, the windings are connected to three slip rings that allow variable resistance in the rotor circuit.
"This has several major benefits for users, including higher rotor circuit resistance, which allows the motor's start-up characteristics to be improved," WEG said. Other advantages include the motor starting current that is kept identical to the rated current, the ability for loads with high starting torque and high inertia loads to be driven
The new motor series comes with a new design in the brush compartment, as well as a transparent window for user inspection and access. The series is available in two versions, with a brush lifting device or with brushes in constant contact.
"The lifting mechanism of the brush lifting device has been redesigned to make it even easier to maintain," the company explained. "Compared to the version with fixed brushes, the brush lifting system requires less maintenance … [and] brush wear is reduced by fitted pressure springs."
For those seeking the option, WEG offers an integrated control system as well for the brush lifting device.
M Mining motors are available with protection ratings from IP55 to IP66, and are protected by WEG paint systems for use in abrasive and humid environments with atmospheric sulphur dioxide.
