The company concedes El Soldado’s operational continuity remains at risk with management looking at ways to avoid closure. The mine produced about 36,000 tonnes of copper in 2015.
An optimisation plan is currently being put into place.

Anglo American will lay off about 150 workers (10% of the workforce) at the El Soldado copper mine in Chile as it fights to keep the operation going.
More copper could come out of the market if El Soldado in Chile is wound back
