Why ESG matters

As the demand for critical minerals escalates, so does the need for mining companies to implement robust ESG action plans. Focusing on community relations, safety, and environmental performance is paramount for attracting investors and ensuring long-term sustainability. In this context, our ESG Index not only highlights current performance but also drives conversations around improvement trends and best practices.

About the ESG Mining Company Index

In our quest to highlight best practices, we have profiled the top 10 mining companies based on their overall ESG scores in our index. This rigorous analysis showcases these leaders and benchmarks their performance against key ESG data points across the top mining companies globally.

About our methodology

Data was collected from the 2024 and 2025 sustainability and annual reports of 60+ of the biggest mining companies by market capitalisation. Companies were assessed using 10+ individually weighted indicators across six ESG categories: Safety, Carbon Emissions, Diversity, Water Management, Land Disturbance and Social Investment.

Results were supplemented with findings from Mining IQ’s ESG Survey 2025, covering industry views on the top ESG priorities, and the industry’s ESG performance to date and outlook. The survey, sent to Aspermont clients and contacts in June and July 2025, was completed by 235 industry professionals from mining companies, service providers, consultants and other organisations.
