The original version of the document was published in 2009. It shared best-practice advice on how mining and metals companies could design effective mechanisms to systematically handle and resolve community concerns or grievances, as well as practical tools to support companies with their implementation.

ICMM CEO Tom Butler said these mechanisms form "a key part of a company's responsibility to respect human rights", ultimately benefitting both the mining company and host community.

As noted in the document, "for any project with potentially significant impacts - even those managed to the highest standards - community grievances are inevitable".

Titled ‘Handling and Resolving Local Level Concerns & Grievances: Human Rights in the Mining & Metals Sector', the 2019 guidance integrates the eight effectiveness criteria of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
