HIGHWALL MINING: No longer a niche

WHILE todays highwall mining systems have their origins in the 1980s the concept of recovering coal from otherwise inaccessible seams using remotely-controlled equipment goes back another 40 years or so. The Appalachian coalfields of the eastern United States have nurtured development of the technology from the beginning with the first successful augers having been introduced there in the 1940s.
