Called Trifecta, the AI system monitors driver behaviour and fatigue using real-time cloud-based technology.

It collects and analyses driver behaviours including mobile phone use, drowsiness, smoking while driving, and seatbelt use violations.

The system then ‘"earns" to pre-empt high risk incidents and alerts mine management and the driver of potential crashes.

Trifecta has been used by Bis across 200 of its operations in Australia and Indonesia over the past three years as a trial.

The system analysed more than 2000 hours of footage per day across Bis' operations.

It then allocated a start rating to each driver, similar to ridesharing apps such as Uber.

Following the success of the trial, Bis is offering the technology system to Australian mining companies and haulage contractors.

Bis chief executive Brad Rogers said Trifecta's deployment across the Bis fleet had led to a massive reduction in driver infractions.

"Incident rates involving smoking breaches while driving and system tampering have decreased to zero, as have seatbelt breaches," he said.

"Instances of mobile phone distractions have consistently trended downwards in the region of 80%."

Not only does Trifecta note poor diving behaviour, it also takes into account positive observations such as in-cabin cleaning and driving skills.

"Trifecta represents the gold standard for driver behaviour monitoring," Rogers said.
