The recently released machine is also the first-ever battery powered unit build from the ground up around lithium battery technology, officials noted. In addition to having no emissions, it also creates just one-eighth the heat of a diesel hauler.

It also features peak power double that of its diesel contemporaries and has four motors on-board.

"The Z40…seamlessly integrates the most capable and proven battery electric powertrain available in the mining industry with the latest and most coveted features of any haul truck on the market today," the company said. "[It] raises the bar of what is possible and enables an all new level of production and cost reduction for underground hard rock mine companies."

An unveiling ceremony was held in March for the Z40, with the machine's first customer joining in on the event: Kirkland Lake Gold.

"KLG continues to challenge conventional thinking and perceived limitations on production and cost reduction and their bets are paying off," the California, US-based company said at the launch.
