Nokia launches 5G technology for better mine connectivity

Nokia will launch a new 5G SA capable smartphone and a range of field routers to allow more enterprises to connect teams and equipment in demanding environments using private wireless networks.

The company said its expanded portfolio of devices would enable better connectivity between machines, sensors and vehicles in harsh environments, such as mines.

It explained that the "highly durable" Nokia XR20 smartphone could work in extreme temperatures from +55c to -22c, 1.8m drops and 1 hour underwater.

Like other industrial handheld devices, it will come pre-loaded with applications such as push-to-voice, -video and messaging and the ability to identify assets by scanning.

Additionally, the field routers can connect to assets wirelessly which Nokia said will meet the demands of a range of industry standards and protocols, including the PROFINET communications, EtherCAT and Modbus.

Shkumbin Hamiti, head of devices and spectrum, Nokia Enterprise Solutions, said the technology could ensure workers, vehicles, and devices can be reliably and securely interact in the most challenging environments.

"By extending our portfolio with a range of 5G SA devices, we enable enterprises to evolve to address the changing business landscape as well as advance in their digital transformation," Hamiti said.
