Digital tailings dam models - watch this space

Data intelligence start-up Descartes Labs, a spin-out from a defence-focused US National Laboratory, has created a geospatial ‘data refinery’, which could also be extended to tailings dam modelling. MM caught up with senior director James Orsulak to find out more

Descartes Labs applies interferometric techniques to complex SAR data to estimate surface deformation for mining areas and tailings dams. The shades of blue indicate areas that have sustained phase shifts suggesting surface deformation of up to 25cm between November of 2016 and January of 2019

Collecting data from diverse sources, with an initial focus on satellite imagery, Descartes Labs' aim is to build digital models and predictions for various industries and their supply chains.
