LKAB picks Konecranes for Sweden, Arctic Circle assets

Iron ore producer LKAB has awarded a multi-year service contract to Konecranes that includes the maintenance of about 1,600 of the company’s assets at four sites in northern Sweden.

Konecranes will service LKAB's industrial doors and lifting equipment at Kiruna and Svappavaara, within the Arctic Circle, as well as lifting equipment at the Malmberget and Luleå sites.

The contract also involves access to Konecranes' digital tools for smarter service, giving LKAB the ability to develop a maintenance plan to maximise its production uptime.
Konecranes was already a supplier to Malmberget, and the new work will be an extension that will cover LKAB company-wide.

"LKAB's mines in northern Sweden are remote and subject to harsh winter weather, with temperatures frequently below -20C. Inside its facilities, some of the equipment needing regular servicing sits more than a kilometer underground in hard-to-reach places, and massive industrial doors cannot fail given the stable temperatures needed to ensure the successful iron ore production process," Konecranes said in a statement.

"Precise planning, fail-safe technology and safety are paramount."

Financial details were not disclosed.

LKAB, or Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag, is wholly owned by the Swedish state.
