PRESS RELEASE: The ban includes the transportation and storage of iron ore, plus the storage of concentrate from the Hierro's beneficiation plant in the Ica region.

During inspections at the Marcona mine and facilities, OEFA detected byproducts in the surrounding air and soil; a leak which it traced back to the stocks of ore and iron concentrate at the Marcona plant.

Due to a lack of environmental control or preventative measures, the particulate material has been dispersed outwards from the site and reached the areas near the San Nicolas Bay.

OEFA has carried out investigations at Marcona before, previously visiting the site to analyse the causes and impact of a conveyor belt fire in 2018.
