MIRARCO Mining Innovation, a research arm of Canada's Laurentian University, has launched a project for mine remediation in Peru with local partners.

The research institute will work with Peru's Universidad Nacional de Moquega and the CORE Foundation to understand mining impacts on the Coralaque River watershed.

The groups will also begin the development of treatment solutions, as well as a remediation plan to improve the quality of the water throughout the watershed.

Communities surrounding the watershed had been living in a state of emergency due to water quality issues.

The MIRARCO team involved in the research trip included chief executive Dr. Nadia Mykytczuk, Laurentian emeritus professor Dr. Charles Ramcharan, and student Lianne Girard. Other researchers include Laurentian's Dr. Graeme Spiers and Dr. Peter Beckett.

The researchers sampled a total of 17 sites. Several researchers will remain for another week to prepare samples for additional analyses.

The Coralaque River watershed will be the first of several projects which Laurentian will work on with UNAM.
