Uptake of digital twins will surely grow as miners understand the role the technology can play in helping them meet important safety, sustainability and productivity goals. The way the technology is used will also evolve. As Dr. Penny Stewart, chief executive of PETRA Data Science, said recently to Australia's Mining Monthly, miners originally used digital twins to build models to simulate and predict what would happen in an operation, but are now increasingly looking to use them for data visualisation and continuous improvement.

More broadly, appetite for digital twin technology is growing across major industries and is expected to increase by 36% over the next five years, according to a new Capegemini study. We will be watching with excitement to see how digital twins are implemented in mine operations in the years to come.
