Officials said the deal to power the mine through commissioning and into production is with an unnamed major electricity retailer, though the miner did not elaborate further on the terms of the deal.

It selected the provider via a two-month-long competitive bidding process.

"The signing of the electricity supply contract is another step in bringing the Woodlawn project on line and ensures that the mine will have sufficient power through the commissioning phase and into production in 2019," managing director Wayne Taylor said, adding it will have a further update on the mine's progress soon.

Woodlawn, located 250km southwest of Sydney, is 100% owned by Heron and has an initial 9.3-year reserves-based mine life and produce zinc in concentrate, copper in concentrate and lead in concentrate, along with associated gold and silver.
