The dry-type transformer manufacturer designed, supplied and installed two 200 kVA - 22 kV to 400 V units housed in specialised IP42-rated ingress protected enclosures that were specified by the customer, according to Trafo managing director David Claassen.

The maker confirmed neither the financial details of the deal nor the identity of the client. Claassen did, however, call the project a larger one, and said there were detailed specifications outlined to ensure the transformers and enclosures matched the site's requirements and constraints.

"Dry-type transformers are well suited for the coal mining environment, with its hazardous areas and its regulations to mitigate fire risk. The dry-type technology uses air to cool the transformers, doing away with the need to use oil as a coolant," Claassen noted, pointing out the absence of oil ups the safety component for the mine.

Trafo also placed earth fault protection and surge protection on the units, and said they will be protected from fine airborne coal dust.

Trafo, based on Johannesburg, said its engineering databased has ore than 1 million designs for applications of various sizes and specifications.
