Sudbury’s geosciences and mining museum Dynamic Earth has kicked off its expansion project.

Dynamic Earth will have its underground exhibition areas expanded.

Dynamic Earth will have its underground exhibition areas expanded.

The expansion will be completed in February 2023, Sudbury.com reported.

Dynamic Earth is building its "Go Deeper: New experiences to engage Northern Ontarians in modern mining and critical minerals" project. This will include new spaces to highlight the future of mining, which will include exhibitions on equipment, technology, innovation, and new opportunities in the mining space.

The new space will include a showcase of mine environments and mining equipment. It will also host a 3-D mapping rock projection multimedia show called The Big Impact. The museum will also have an underground tour to take visitors through a history of mining in Sudbury.

New underground exhibits will include a new Vale Chasm elevator show, a hands-on innovation gallery, and a film about regreening of the Sudbury area.

Work is now being undertaken for rock removal, and local businesses have been notified that seismic monitoring tools will be installed in and around structures to ensure safety and measure vibration levels.

As per its usual schedule, Dynamic Earth will be closed to general visitors from September until February, with the exception of its annual Halloween event.

School groups visiting Dynamic Earth between September and February will be notified of rock removal one hour before, and will only be able to access surface-level exhibitions. Workers will set off a warning signal before beginning a blast, and will sound an alarm once the blasting is finished.

The museum launched a C$3 million capital campaign to raise funds for the expansion in April.
