The METS Ignited Bowen Basin Cluster Program, launched on October 9 in Mackay, has been designed to encourage companies to collaborate for the development and commercialisation of solutions for the region’s mining community under the Queensland METS (mining equipment, technology and services) 10-year Roadmap and Action Plan and examine industry challenges.

The Queensland Government and METS Ignited developed the initiative together, and state development minister Dr Anthony Lynham said it will have benefits for the region. In addition, mining’s longstanding obstacles – such as accelerating rehabilitation and remediation timelines and the installation of health and safety technology such as environmental monitoring systems – will also be addressed.

“The programme offers an opportunity for companies that have complementary skills and expertise to collaborate to solve real business problems, to deliver more long-term jobs and business opportunities for regional Queenslanders,” Lynham said.

The Roadmap and Action Plan is part of the state’s A$420 million (US$327 million) Advance Queensland initiative and has been backed by a A$7 million mining technology-specific investment.

“Local miners will identify their challenges, and local mining technology companies will collaborate on innovative solutions to bolster the North Queensland economy,’’ Julieanne Gilbert, member for Mackay, said. “We want to make it easier for companies to turn their ideas into commercial products for market.’’

Applications are now open for the programme and can be submitted via www.metsignited.org until October 30.
