The network will be used by the operator to support automation of  72 connected vehicles and machines including remote-controlled trucks, excavators, and drills, with drones also to be deployed in future.

The network will use 150 sensors for operational processes, monitoring and accident prevention.

The private 4.9G network, built with local partner Claro Chile, will use Nokia's indoor radio and hub features - .

"Automation relies on the ability to sense, analyze and act. To do so, industries are connecting every sensor, machine and worker in the most flexible way — and for that they need business and mission-critical wireless networking solutions such as private LTE/4.9G," said Fernando Sosa, Head of Market Unit Southern Cone, Nokia.

"By working with Claro Chile to create such an automated ecosystem for Gold Fields, we are opening new opportunities for enterprises and other asset-intensive industries, such as energy and rail, throughout Chile."

Salares Norte is estimated to have reserves of 5.2 million ounces of gold.

In January, British power generation company Aggreko was chosen to develop a hybrid solar and thermal power solution at the mine.
