The plant on Malaysia's east coast has been shuttered since the government first implemented the Movement Control Order on March 18, which was meant to stay in place until May 12.

The government announced on May 1 that most economic sectors including manufacturing would be allowed to restart operations from May 4 if they complied with strict health and hygiene practices.

The company said in a statement to the Australian Securities Excange: "We expect that producing at this (70%) rate will enable us to refill supply chains and to restock depleted inventories of critical materials, while maintaining new health and hygiene protocols at each site. Our number one priority will continue to be the health and safety of our people and our local communities."

Lynas is continuing operations at its Mount Weld mine and pre-processing plant in Western Australia at reduced staffing levels, in line with government guidelines.
