Woolpert taking to the air for new mining contracts

Firm will perform aerial mapping, surveying for two global mining clients

The projects involve collecting images that will aid the mines in blast drillhole location validation, change detection analysis and volumetric calculations.

Additionally, the data will provide digital terrain information to the mines for use with their respective autonomous hauling trucks.

UAS technology manager and program director Aaron Lawrence pointed out that UAS was the best tool for safe, effective spatial data gathering in the mining environment - whether used alone or in tandem with traditional technologies and manned aircraft.

"Mines and their materials are in constant flux due to the nature of the business, and they are subject to the elements year-round," he said.

"A heavy rain event, for example, requires a site evaluation to ensure that the site is safe for operation. This often means reinforcement of haul roads, pumping of water and re-stabilisation of vertical structures."

Woolpert, which said the clients had not been named due to "competitive and industry sensitivity", confirmed that the work for both miners was in progress.
