GIW officials said it was selected for the order because of the reputation of its centrifugal slurry pumps and experience in slurry transport.

It also represents a milestone for the company as it continues to invest in the Peruvian market and build its copper and gold applications even further in South America.

The pump maker's local technicians will be on-site for Quellaveco's installation, commissioning and start-up of the pumps.

Hernan Palavecino, South America region manager at GIW Industries, said: "Economic stability and continuous growth in [Peru] have facilitated the investment of new mining projects. Over the years, Peru has become a key player in the global market, and that is why we are proud to be involved in this project."

He added: "GIW recognises the importance of the Quellaveco mine to the region. The greenfield project solidifies Peru's position as a substantial player in the South American and global mining markets."

Peru is the largest producer of gold and the second largest producer of copper, zinc and silver in South America. Its silver reserves are the largest in the world.

GIW is a subsidiary of KSB.
