The companies, which have already inked their collaboration agreement, will bring together their expertise on engineering, research and development, data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) and process control, with the goal of building upon Newcrest's existing digital platforms. All are elements of Newcrest's transformational growth ambitions for 2020.

"We are always seeking out new ways to improve our operations," CEO and managing director Sandeep Biswas said. "The IDOC will extensively leverage TCS' global research and innovation networks to explore opportunities to improve activities across our business, including ore processing, techniques for predictive targeting, and leveraging learning from other industries."

He added that the company wants to both enhance and fast-track how it uses automation and AI across its business.

"We are excited to embark upon this innovation and transformation journey with Newcrest, strongly backed by our Business 4.0 framework," TCS president of energy and resources Debashis Ghosh said.

"Our independent agile method provides the foundation for the strategic collaboration with Newcrest, for the design and adoption of innovative digital mining solutions to enable Newcrest's aspirations."

Newcrest has operations in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, as well as numerous brownfield and greenfield exploration projects.
