Swedish mining company Boliden will make plans to alleviate bottlenecks and meet the booming demand for zinc after being granted an environmental permit to increase the annual production at its mine in Garpenberg, Sweden.

The company said it aims to increase production to 3.3 million tonnes from its current capacity of 3 million tonnes by 2023.

It explained that the new environmental permit could make further capacity reinforcements in the transport infrastructure.

Stefan Romedahl, president, Business Area Mines, Boliden, described the granting of the environmental permit as "a welcome decision" and claimed that the company would be meeting increased demand for zinc with "world-leading sustainability performance".

Garpenberg is situated in Hedemora, Sweden's oldest mining area still in operation, and is the most productive zinc mine in the world, according to Boliden.

As well as zinc, it produces silver, copper and gold.
